Drink lots of fluids to ensure the sputum is more fluid in consistency and therefore, easier to expel when you cough. You can drink water or juice rich with Vitamin C. Soup, tea, and other hot liquids may provide faster relief compared to cold drinks plus an added bonus also includes soothing the throat from the irritation caused by too much coughing.
You can also gargle with saltwater to provide soothing sensation from throat inflammation, as well as to dissolve any mucus that may be coating the throat membranes. Just add one teaspoon of salt to a glass of lukewarm water. This amount will be enough as too much salt can burn the throat while too little of it will be ineffective. Gargle as often as you need to, but make sure that you don’t swallow the saltwater after gargling.
