Temporomandibular joint syndrome is a painful condition that often lasts for two weeks and reduces ability to eat, chew and talk. The first thing to do is to avoid all hard foods and base your meals on soft foods, soups and drinks. Warm compresses should be applied at the swollen joint to alleviate the symptoms. Small joint movements and exercise is suggested and speeds up the healing process. Extreme joint movements should be avoided. Another advice is to keep your teeth slightly apart. Do not apply pressure on the joint (rest your chin on your hand etc.). Relaxation techniques, massages, physical therapy should be considered, too.
